Character Name: Shin-ah / Seiryuu
Series: Akatsuki no Yona (Yona of the Dawn)
Canon Point:Chapter 105, although technically "heading out on the road after that"
Summary/History: For once, a pretty accurate wiki
Just. That covers only part of it.
After the failed coup,
They head to the Water Tribe's territory next, and end up helping the daughter of the water general end drug trafficking, before heading north.
Here, they end up across the border again, and Kija falls ill to a local fever, and then Jae-ha and Shin-ah follow. At this same time, the new king of Kouka moves to reclaim this land, and wins. However, the defeated army's remnants go on a rampage – if we're losing it, they're going to gain nothing. The three dragons are barely able to stand when they go to aid Hak in defending the village they're near, and end up badly injured. Zeno introduces them to an alternative meaning for "strong bodied" Yellow Dragon – he is immortal. The terror of fighting someone who gets back up after being beheaded, who grows scales all over after being mortally wounded enough times, is enough to break the armies will.
And so the Yona and the dragons return to Kouka kingdom proper to heal – their abilities and strength weakened outside the country's borders, thus why they all got sick in the first place – as Zeno explains that he is the original yellow dragon warrior, so Shin-ah is definitely the youngest dragon.
Zeno takes a nap, has some flash-backs, then when he wakes, convinces his cute little brothers to come close so he can hug them.
Personality:
Despite the constant creepy mask, Shin-ah is a very kind person. All his life he has been hated and feared by his village, but all he does is try to protect them. It isn't hard for him to extend this protective helpfulness to Yona, who is lost and being kidnapped by one of his villagers. This protectiveness generally extends to everyone who isn't trying to hurt Yona, or his other friends – he easily takes up a protective role in the villages of the fire tribe.
The villager's fear and neglect of him only served to make him want companionship. He admitted to Ao (the previous Seiryuu) that he wanted friends, only to be told that so long as he was the seiryuu, he wouldn't have any. Shin-ah decided that maybe, just maybe, Ao was wrong and if he protected them well enough, protected them without his feared eye powers, that he could have friends. This is why, even when his blood tells him that he is to love and protect Yona, he threatens her to try to protect his villagers. His desire to protect even has him embracing the side of himself he hates – his eye powers aren't something he has full control over, but when Yona is in danger and he had no other options, he goes against his self-promises to save her.
Due to being more or less locked in his house or room his entire life, Shin-ah understandably doesn't really understand much of the outside world. This means just about everything is met with quiet curiosity, and occasionally near child-like questions. The last time he had someone who might answer him was when he was four, after all.
He's definitely very shy – why the questions are only on occasion, rather than a constant. When accidentally doused with a love potion that ought to make him madly in love with the next person he sees, he instead follows from a steady distance, too shy to get any closer. This is usually how his friends explain his unwillingness to part with his mask.
Shin-ah is very quiet – his villagers reacted with fear to his presence, so talking would only make things worse (not to mention, he lived in a cave complex, talking loudly was just not that great of an idea). For the most part, he gets his point across with simple gestures – indicating his eyes is a clear answer, as is shrugging. Less simple is when he decides to do instead of explain or offer – tucking the fur from his mask around those he thinks are cold, or running off to catch a fish in gratitude. He doesn't like to bother people, so will occasionally over-think questions until he's a ball of confused, rather than ask something.
He is rather independent. The villagers cared only that he stayed alive, and so provided him with the bare minimum. If the current Seiryuu died, any current pregnancy could turn out to be the next one, and as they viewed the seiryuu as a curse, they'd prefer not to have another for as long as possible. Four 14 years, Shin-ah had to learn by watching and then doing.
Using his eye abilities has Shin-ah slowly falling to them – the hatred of previous Seiryuu has twisted the ability, perhaps, or maybe the blue dragon was a bloodthirsty one. Either way, Shin-ah begins to enjoy devouring his targets, delighting in teaching them fear and destroying them. Closing or covering his eyes is enough to bring Shin-ah back into control.
Because this happens, Shin-ah is very uncomfortable with using his ability, and takes hiding his face to the point where he will not even let one of his other dragon "siblings" see his eyes. He keeps that mask on at all times – shifting it aside to sleep, or to look further. Yona has asked him to start trying to think of his eyes as part of him – she and the other dragon warriors don't consider them a curse, like his village does – and he has started trying to change his mind, to the point of actually attempting to use his powers while sick and injured.
Powers/Abilities:
Really Good At Swords / knife throwing – Shin-ah is capable of keeping up with Hak – the completely unpowered human who is known as the Lightning Beast for how fast he moves with his halberd – and Kija, who's right arm is as strong as ten men. He uses a sword without a guard.
Iron Stomach – he is used to and comfortable eating just about anything.
Watch and Learn – basically how he has learned everything. He watches and he replicates.
Dragon Eyes (passive) – he can see across long distances very clearly, and through thin wood and cloth easily (his mask does not have eye holes, and he wears a blindfold later because his mask sticks out too much). This includes night – he can "see through" the darkness.
Dragon Eyes (Active) – the village he was raised spread it like this – "looking into Seiryuu's eyes will turn you to stone. "While he does not turn people to stone, he instead paralyzes them – which was shown with massive amounts of fear hallucinations. The longer he keeps eye contact, the more paralysis happens – he can stop hearts. Because Shin-Ah does not use this power often, he has little control over it – the Blue Dragon's "hunger" can overwhelm him and make him kill more than he would want to. (This is why he wears a mask all the time – he's afraid of accidentally meeting someone's eyes for too long). After deactivating this power, he is hit with a temporary, full body paralysis. (it might mirror what he's done, we're not sure because he avoids using it)
It's.. basically Fear Hallucinations by meeting his eyes. That can kill you.
